Fallon Health Canal Diggers 5K to Begin at Polar Park

Worcester, MA, September 1, 2021— Fallon Health today announced Worcester’s most popular 5K, the Fallon Health Canal Diggers Road Race, will be back in-person for 2021. New this year, the event will kick off at Polar Park— home of the WooSox and the centerpiece of the revitalized Canal District. The entire Kids Fun Run will also take place in the ballpark.

The race, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2021, will also include a virtual option. Participants opting to run on their own will need to submit finish times between 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 5 and noon on Friday, September 10.

“Many in the community are eager to get back to racing in person, and we are excited to welcome racers and spectators back to the course,” said Brendan Moran, co-chair of the Canal Diggers 5K. “We also recognize there are those who are still uncomfortable running in a crowd. Having both an in-person and virtual option allows participants to makes the decision that is right for them.”

“As a community focused, not-for-profit health care services organization, Fallon is proud to be a long-time supporter of the Canal Diggers road race—an event that keeps people healthy by getting them up and moving,” said Richard Burke, President and CEO of Fallon Health. “The addition of Polar Park to the Canal District has been a great source of pride for the City of Worcester. As a founding partner of the WooSox, I cannot think of a more perfect venue to get the community excited about the race and to help showcase the area.”

“We are continually impressed and inspired by the community commitment of Richard Burke and the Fallon Health Family,” said Dr. Charles Steinberg, President of the Worcester Red Sox. “We are delighted to demonstrate yet again Polar Park’s role as a civic gathering spot for such a great group and such a worthy cause. We treasure our corporate partnerships and our community partnerships, and this event illustrates the importance of both. We hope the Canal Diggers have a wonderful time.”

Registration is open now through 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8 at www.canaldiggers.org. The fee is $35. The Youth 1K registration cost is $15. There will be no race day registration.

The first 500 pre-registered runners will receive a performance t-shirt. Medals and other runner amenities will be given out at the event. All virtual runners are guaranteed a medal.
