WORCESTER— The city’s annual Independence Day celebration will begin at 6 p.m. July 3 at Cristoforo Colombo Park on Shrewsbury Street, with the fireworks display set to begin at 9:30 p.m.

City Manager Michael V. O’Brien announced yesterday that Fallon Community Health Plan has agreed to sponsor the fireworks display. The festivities also will include a performance by the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra, starting at 8 p.m., as part of the Bank of America Summer Concert Series.

“In light of the present state of world events, it is perhaps more important than ever that we come together as a community to celebrate this great land in which we live,” Mr. O’Brien said. “We are most grateful to Fallon Community Health Plan and all of our sponsors and partners for ensuring that the tradition of the fireworks and revelry at East Park continues.”

The park will open to the public at 6 p.m., and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Children’s games and activities will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m., including face painting by the Mount Carmel Youth Program and other hands-on activities provided by the Worcester Art Museum, Higgins Armory Museum, Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, the Worcester Sharks, Foothills Theatre and the EcoTarium.

The event is coordinated by the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the city of Worcester. Additional supporting sponsors include Price Chopper Supermarkets, Polar Beverages, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Charter Communications, TV3, WSRS & WTAG Radio, and the New England Regional Council of Carpenters.
