Fallon Community Health Plan awards $21,000 to Great Brook Valley Health Center

Grant money to support expansion of Peer Leadership Program

Worcester, Mass., December 3, 2007—Fallon Community Health Plan (FCHP) will award $21,000 to the Great Brook Valley Health Center through its Community Benefits Grant Program. This funding will support the expansion of the center’s Peer Leadership Program, which provides educational and recreational activities to at-risk youth.

“The Great Brook Valley Health Center is committed to creating access to high-quality, comprehensive health care for all people,” said Leah P. Gallivan, Interim CEO, Great Brook Valley Health Center. “This program is designed to promote awareness of risky behaviors and increase decision making skills that can result in increased self-esteem, and the potential for academic success and career development.”

With the grant, the center is able to hire a part-time health educator and two peer leaders, while anticipating serving an additional 100 youth. “One success of the program is reflected in the fact that while peer leaders have strong messages to deliver, they also advance themselves in their ability to relate to others in crisis and at-risk, identify their own need for life skills development and their own potential to emerge as healthy and successful adults,” added Gallivan.
Every year, Fallon Community Health Plan seeks grant applications from non-profit organizations dedicated to improving the lives of youth in communities throughout Massachusetts.

“Children are our future, and by supporting the Great Brook Valley Health Center and its Peer Leadership Program, FCHP is helping youth in our community develop life skills that will keep them from risk, while also staying focused on education and career goals,” said Eric H. Schultz, President and CEO, Fallon Community Health Plan.
